WEBB – Telescope Project

Das James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) ist ein Weltraumteleskop, das gemeinsam von der NASA, der European Space Agency (ESA) und der Canadian Space Agency (CSA) entwickelt wird. Es ist geplant, das Hubble-Weltraumteleskop als Astrophysik-Flaggschiff-Mission der NASA abzulösen. JWST soll am Samstag, den 25. Dezember 2021, während des Ariane-Flugs VA256 gestartet werden. Es wird eine verbesserte Infrarotauflösung und -empfindlichkeit gegenüber Hubble bieten und eine breite Palette von Untersuchungen in den Bereichen Astronomie und Kosmologie ermöglichen, einschließlich der Beobachtung einiger der entferntesten Ereignisse und Objekte im Universum, wie z. B. die Entstehung der ersten Galaxien, und detaillierte atmosphärische Charakterisierung potenziell bewohnbarer Exoplaneten.

Der Fokus des Patches liegt auf dem Primärspiegel von JWST, dem Optical Telescope Element, das aus 18 sechseckigen Spiegelsegmenten aus vergoldetem Beryllium besteht, die zusammen einen Spiegel mit einem Durchmesser von 6,5 m (21 ft) bilden.

Im Mittelpunkt des Patches steht der Start einer Ariane-5-Trägerrakete vom Raumfahrtzentrum Guayana in Französisch-Guayana. Oben ist das JWST vollständig im Weltraum eingesetzt dargestellt. Die 20 Sterne repräsentieren die 14 Länder und sechs Partner aus Wissenschaft und Industrie, die an diesen Bemühungen beteiligt sind.

NASA: Gesamtverantwortung für die Webb-Mission.

ESA: Stellt den Nahinfrarot-Spektrographen, die Instrumentenoptikbaugruppe für das mittlere Infrarot und die Ariane-Trägerrakete bereit.

CSA: Bietet den Feinführungssensor/Nahinfrarot-Imager und den schlitzlosen Spektrographen.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope being jointly developed by NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It is planned to succeed the Hubble Space Telescope as NASA’s Flagship astrophysics mission. JWST is scheduled to be launched Saturday 25th of  December 2021 during Ariane flight VA256. It will provide improved infrared resolution and sensitivity over Hubble, and will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology, including observing some of the most distant events and objects in the universe, such as the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.

The focus of the patch is the primary mirror of JWST, the Optical Telescope Element, consists of 18 hexagonal mirror segments made of gold-plated beryllium which combine to create a 6.5 m (21 ft) diameter mirror.

In the center of the patch is the launch on an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. At the top the JWST is shown fully deployed in space. The 20 stars represent the 14 countries and six academic and industry partners involved in this effort.

NASA: Overall responsibility for the Webb mission.

ESA: Provides the Near Infrared Spectrograph, Mid-Infrared Instrument Optics Assembly, and the Ariane Launch Vehicle.

CSA: Provides the Fine Guidance Sensor/Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph.
